Although Bucharest is where the money is which makes Romania go round, there are still a couple of great things to do without paying. A king once said that the best things in life are free! So here is my list of best free activities in Bucharest. Some places have been reviewed and publicised while others are just my personal recommendations.
Guided Bucharest Free Walking tour
No presentation needed. Number 1 Attraction on Trip Advisor and the most loved tour in the city. It runs twice every day in the old town at 10.30h and 18.00h. It covers the most important sights of Bucharest and tries to show you the city in a chronological way. Guided Bucharest Free Walking Tour.
Generally the entrance in churches and monasteries is free of charge. Like a bonus, at different celebrations you can also receive “coliva”, a special cake offered in the memory of loved ones. Don’t miss Darvari Church and don’t forget to also include Stavropoleos, Antim, Mihai Voda, St. Anthony’s and the Patriarchy churches.
Bucharest has many green parks that are just waiting to be discovered. Best place to jog, stroll or relax for locals and foreigners alike. The most popular ones are Cismigiu (the city’s oldest) and Herastrau (largest park around). There are also a couple of more hidden ones, like Luigi Cazzavilian, Ioanid, Icoanei or Tineretului.
Even though most museums have really small entrance fees, two of them are completely free: The Jewish Museum and the Communist permanent exhibition. Don’t be fooled by the non-existing entrance fee. They are small but really great museums.
Palace of Parliament
The guided tour inside costs some money but seeing it from the outside is free. And, believe me, because of its size you can see it from almost every corner of Bucharest.
Hanul lui Manuc
Getting in the courtyard and admiring this piece of medieval architecture is free. But there are great chances you’ll end up soaking a cold beer in the restaurant there.
Ciclop parking place
This alternative place transformed from a boring parking lot into a real gallery for street artists. It is the best place to get in contact with nowadays local culture but beware that sometimes it can be closed.
Nothing is better than to stroll the cobbled streets on a lovely evening with a nice sunset.
